It appears the proof of mercury toxicity danger, in animals and humans, certainly can no longer be denied.44"48 A study in spring 2003, showed the risks of neurodevelopment and heart disease rose with increased mercury exposures. It also showed strong evidence that the mercury in children's vaccines was linked to neurodevelopmental problems.85 Why is the American Dental Association so reluctant to admit they have made a serious error in judgment? |

Symptoms of mercury toxicity include irritability, anxiety, restlessness, memory and attention problems, confusion, and loss of coordination.
Diet
Specific dietary tactics including avoiding allergenic foods, reducing sugar intake, and increasing consumption of foods rich in vitamins and minerals have been shown to help control ADHD in children and adults.
Allergenic Foods
Food allergies are a common, though controversial area of concern for people with ADHD. Oligoantigenic (few-foods) diets for ADHD have convincing double-blind evidence of efficacy (Egger et al. |
| According to these researchers, evidence is increasing that links the systemic effects of mercury toxicity to the development of chronic kidney and autoimmune disorders such as arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, ALS, and hypothyroidism. The doctors recommend testing to evaluate how much mercury is stored in the tissues and the level of toxicity. The next step may be medical detoxification both before and after having mercury amalgams replaced with biocompatible materials. |

Anyone working with mercury, especially methyl or ethyl mercury or mercuric chloride, is more likely to have problems of mercury toxicity. Farmers using mercury products should be very careful with them and should be aware of mercury toxicity symptoms or have mercury levels checked every couple of years.
Treatment of toxicity: Drinking milk helps reduce the acute effects of mercury, as the mercury will act on the protein in the milk instead of on the stomach and intestinal lining. This may prevent the acute symptoms of gastrointestinal tissue irritation, such as vomiting and bleeding. |

Many researchers suspect dental amalgam as being a possible soutce of mercury toxicity [Omura et al. 1996; O'Brien 2001].) Medicines, such as mercurochrome and merthiolate, are still available. Algaecides and childhood vaccines are also potential sources. Inhalation is the most frequent cause of exposure to mercury. The organic form is readily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract (90-100%); lesser but still significant amounts of inorganic mercury are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract (7-15%). Target organs are the brain and kidneys (Roberts 1999; ASTDRToxFAQs™ for Mercury). |
| Dental amalgam is also suspected as being a possible source of mercury toxicity from chronic exposure. Some physicians suggest that amalgam fillings could be part of the explanation for the explosion of learning problems and autism in children since World War II, a time period corresponding with the introduction and widespread use of mercury amalgam (O'Brien 2001). Studies in both animals and humans have confirmed the presence of mercury from amalgam fillings in tissue specimens, blood, amniotic fluid, or urine (Vimy et al. 1990; Willershausen-Zonnchen et al. 1992; Gebel et al. |

She even tried replacing her dental fillings to avoid contamination by "mercury toxicity"—all to no avail.
Ten years after her tick bite, Jeanne finally came to see Pat. She was upset, tearful, and frightened. Her life had spun out of control, and nothing seemed able to bring it back on track.
Because Jeanne's system had become extremely reactive to medication, antidepressants were out of the question. Instead, Pat started her on a tiny dose of Rhodiola rosea—just one-sixth of a 100-milligram capsule every morning. Miraculously, she showed improvement on the very first day she took the herb. |

Mercury, a toxic heavy metal, has been shown in numerous studies to cause thyroid dysfunction. mercury toxicity is rampant in the United States due, in large part, due to the use of amalgam fillings by dentists. Amalgam fillings contain approximately 50% mercury. In my practice, I have diagnosed a significant number of patients with mercury toxicity. When this toxic load is reduced, many systems in the body improve, including the thyroid and other endocrine glands.
Finally, many drugs used in conventional medicine can inhibit thyroid function. |

DMSA is used in conjunction with or as an alternative to BAL for lead and mercury toxicity. DMSA is less toxic than BAL, and it is sometimes substituted for BAL when the patient's condition improves. It is also used when intolerance to BAL develops. Although DMSA is similar to BAL, it has fewer and milder side effects (e.g., nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; rhinitis and cough; and rash) (see the ASTDR Medical Management Guidelines). |

When a diagnosis of mercury toxicity is made, all mercury-containing fillings should be removed before instituting a detoxification program.
However, caution must be observed when removing mercury fillings. If proper procedures for removing mercury fillings are not observed, there is a risk of actually increasing the release of mercury vapors in the body.
Proper removal of mercury fillings should be done with a rubber dam, and be performed by a dentist skilled in the proper removal of mercury fillings. |
| In addition, I recommend that you work with a health care practitioner who is knowledgeable about mercury toxicity and skilled in the use of agents to detoxify the body. Mercury is a very dangerous substance; often it takes a "team" working together to get the best results. The removal of mercury fillings is an expensive process and one that must be done with great care. A dentist who is knowledgeable about the dangers of mercury can be found by contacting the following organizations:

Mercury is a known cell toxin that can cause imbalances in the immune system and can interfere with normal hormonal function. The thyroid gland and the pituitary/hypothalamic glands are very sensitive to mercury. Mercury is easily absorbed from the fillings in the mouth. It can be released as a vapor in the mouth, and chewing exacerbates its release. In fact, studies have shown that gum chewing can increase the release of mercury in the form of mercury vapor by 1,560%. |

Remove The Source
The first rule of toxicology is to remove the source of the problem. One of the major sources of mercury is dental amalgams. Does everyone who has mercury fillings need to have their fillings replaced with non-mercury fillings? There is no clear-cut answer. I do not advocate the immediate removal of mercury fillings unless there is a medical reason. |

Like lead, mercury toxicity may produce symptoms at both ends of the ADD spectrum—irritability, excitability, restlessness, aggression, and anxiety on the one hand, and memory and learning problems, fatigue, lethargy, and depression on the other. If you then include allergies and headaches, you see that mercury alone may produce any ADD-like symptoms a pediatrician is likely to see.
Mercury is also in the air, the water, and on the soil. |

Fish consumption alone may be enough to cause mercury toxicity. An article by the Canadian Medical Association in 1976 reported that Indians in Northern Canada, who ate over one pound of fish per day, had symptoms of mercury poisoning. A1985 study in West Germany of 136 people who regularly consumed fish from the Elbe River found a correlation between the blood levels of both mercury and pesticides and the amount of fish eaten.
Fish and shellfish may also carry their own toxins. The most common of these toxins is ciguatera poisoning. |

Mercury Exposure and Thyroid Abnormalities
Mercury has been shown to bind to the thyroid gland and disrupt its functioning.7 8 Mercury binds very tightly to fatty tissues of the body (i.e., the brain) and to cells with sulfhydryl groups. Many enzymes contain sulfhydryl groups that cause many crucial reactions to happen in the body. |

Mercury: Mercury is even more toxic than lead. mercury toxicity can mimic and cause many neurological, endocrine, or immune diseases, and it can damage DNA. It accumulates in the kidneys, liver, and the most toxic forms of mercury accumulate in the brain. The distribution in the brain is not random, as higher concentrations are found in the hypothalamus and the pituitary, two crucial regulatory centers. |

| Together, elevations of these porphyrins served as bio-markers of mercury toxicity.
Upregulation of the heme biosynthetic pathway, with the concomitant increase in delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), is another mechanism by which porphyria can be precipitated. Increased ALA production is usually a normal physiological response to provide enough of this pre-porphyrin precursor to meet the body's demand for heme. However, overproduction of ALA can overwhelm even a normally functioning heme biosynthetic pathway, resulting in the inappropriate accumulation of ALA and/ or the porphyrins. |
