By the 33rd day the mercury levels in the fetal tissues were higher than in the mother. At 73 days the mercury levels in the mother's tissues had continued to rise. These researchers felt this study showed that dental amalgam was probably the major source for human mercury exposure.
When mothers realize that their fillings can injure their baby's brains and that low I.Q. and slow learning may be a consequence they will be very upset. Mercury vapor is toxic to the fetal brain resulting in autism, attention deficit disorder, and learning disabilities. |

Mercury
A 24-hour urine specimen is collected for measurement of mercury levels. Chest x-rays can reveal a collection of mercury from exposure to elemental mercury or a pulmonary embolism containing mercury (Ferner 2001). Abdominal x-rays can reveal swallowed mercury as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract. Blood and urine samples are used to determine recent exposure, as well as exposure to elemental mercury and inorganic forms of mercury. Scalp hair is used in testing for exposure to methylmercury. Liver and kidney function tests are also important in severely exposed persons. |

| So serious is the mercury threat that twenty states have issued warnings instructing fishermen to limit and, in some cases, discard the fish they catch from certain lakes that contain seriously high mercury levels. In addition, the EPA has estimated that people who consume more than 30 pounds of fish a year are at higher risk for mercury exposure, particularly pregnant women, and sportfishermen who catch and ingest contaminated fish.
Environmental pollution is not limited to the land and sea. |

Also, your physician can work with you to ensure that mercury levels will not climb as the fillings are removed. Removing mercury fillings without taking the proper precautions can cause an elevated mercury release in the body and immune system malfunction.
Mercury and other heavy metal detoxification requires extreme care and close monitoring. Monitoring should include measurement of pre- and post- levels of heavy metals to check progress. I prefer using urine challenge tests, including the use of DMSA, DMPS, and Glutathione. |

Coagulation Disorders
Coagulation Disorders
This Chapter will explore the concept of coagulation disorders and their relationship to thyroid disorders and other chronic diseases. In a healthy state, there is harmony in the body between two competing systems; the blood clotting system and the bleeding system. |
| I have found that using DMSA (an oral mercury chelating agent) about one hour before removal of mercury fillings can be very helpful in keeping mercury levels low. Also, the proper use of nutritional supplements can assist in keeping detoxification pathways functioning optimally. This will help the body rid itself of toxins such as mercury. For a list of supplements recommended, see Figure 13 below. |

The incorrect removal of mercury fillings can actually result in higher mercury levels being released in the body. In addition, I recommend that you work with a health care practitioner who is knowledgeable about mercury toxicity and skilled in the use of agents to detoxify the body. Mercury is a very dangerous substance; often it takes a "team" working together to get the best results. The removal of mercury fillings is an expensive process and one that must be done with great care. |
| Three months later, after carefully following her declining mercury levels, she made a dramatic improvement in her health. "It was like a light switch had been turned on. I feel like I have been given my life back. My energy is back to normal and my achiness is gone, " she happily reported. Jessica eventually had her mercury fillings taken out and enjoys good health today.
Treating Heavy Metal Toxicity
Once a diagnosis of elevated heavy metals is made, an appropriate detoxification program should be implemented. |
| In addition, she was found to have elevated mercury levels in her body, probably due to her dental (amalgam) fillings. Upon removal of her fdlings and undergoing an appropriate detoxification program (i.e., taking the oral chelating agent DMSA—covered in Chapter 10), coupled with vitamin and mineral supplementation, Judy's health continued to improve. (For more information on nutritional supplementation and detoxification, see Chapters 9 and 10.)
The cause of psoriatic arthritis is unknown. In conventional medicine there is usually little thought given to an infectious etiology. |

Lead
Lead is an environmental pollutant that is very toxic to humans. In young children, it acts as a neurotoxin and can adversely affect intelligence, concentration and language development. Lead toxicity can lead to ADHD, headaches, fatigue, muscle pains, indigestion, tremors, constipation and poor coordination. |

It is important also to note the data on increased mercury levels found in deep-water fish such as tuna and swordfish. Although fish is an excellent source of protein as well as omega-3 fatty acids, one should use caution due to the possibility of heavy metal toxicity. Although I do not restrict omega-3 fatty acids from fish, these healthy fats can also be found in grain and vegetable sources as well as in walnuts and flax seed. Pumpkin seeds and soybeans supply small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids as well. Avocados are particularly high in total fat but contain omega-3 fatty acids. |

Huggins has also found that there is a clear relationship between mercury levels in patients and dramatic changes in their white blood cell (WBC) counts. White blood cells are the key operatives in the immune system's defense against foreign substances and disease-provoking agents. "Overly high WBC levels tend to come down and depressed levels tend to come up when mercury fillings are removed," Dr. Huggins reports. "Bear in mind that the normal range for WBCs is 4,500 to 10,500, with 5,500 being optimal. However, this level is increasingly achieved only by those who have no mercury fillings. |
| A Danish study of 100 men and 100 women showed that increased blood mercury levels were related to the presence of more than four amalgam fillings.9 American, Swedish, and German scientists examining cadavers have also found a clear relationship between the number of fillings and the amount of mercury in the brain and kidneys.10
In Germany the sale and manufacture of amalgams has been prohibited since March 1992. |

| There is intriguing evidence correlating increased hair mercury levels with certain disease conditions.45,46 For instance, chronic mercury ingestion may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Recent data suggest that a high intake of mercury from non-fatty freshwater fish and the consequent accumulation of mercury in the body is associated with an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction, as well as death from cardiovascular disease in general. This increased risk has been proposed to be due to the promotion of lipid peroxidation by mercury. |

Her elevated mercury levels were likely caused by years of mercury exposure as a dental assistant as well as the silver-mercury amalgam fillings in her own mouth.
Initially, Terri's treatment consisted of the Ultra Clear cleansing program to eliminate her food allergens and enhance her liver detoxification capacity. Next, she began a hypoallergenic Candida-control diet, took prescription antifungal medication and nutrients for her PMS. She also received an intravenous vitamin/mineral injection every one to two weeks, with an anti-infection, immune-enhancing herbal combination formula. |

In a 1998 study from the Karolinska Institute amalgam removal was followed in 60 days by a 60% fall in mercury levels in blood, plasma, and urine. With the passage of time the levels returned to those of persons who never had silver amalgams.
Evaluation of 60 patients in Sweden who had amalgam removal revealed that 78% were satisfied or very satisfied and 9.5% were disappointed. The reasons for removal varied from desire to avoid future health problems to treatment of serious current disease. |

Vitamin C, selenium, and the fibers pectin and algin may also reduce mercury levels and toxicity, though usually only in cases of less severity.
Prevention: Avoidance of mercury contamination is foremost in preventing mercury toxicity. Staying clear of mercury fungicides and avoiding fungicide-treated foods or eating only organically grown grains and produce may be helpful. Many health-oriented dentists now avoid mercury-containing amalgam to prevent further mercury exposure. Silver-mercury fillings during pregnancy, I believe, should be avoided. |
| Farmers using mercury products should be very careful with them and should be aware of mercury toxicity symptoms or have mercury levels checked every couple of years.
Treatment of toxicity: Drinking milk helps reduce the acute effects of mercury, as the mercury will act on the protein in the milk instead of on the stomach and intestinal lining. This may prevent the acute symptoms of gastrointestinal tissue irritation, such as vomiting and bleeding.

It is used as a challenge test to evaluate mercury toxicity by collecting a sample of overnight urine, administering 300 mg of DMPS, and then collecting another urine sample 6 hours later. If mercury levels are elevated, indicating mercury toxicity, another chelator, EDTA, is used to chelate the mercury from the system. EDTA, ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid, is a weak acid used to remove heavy metals and it is considered beneficial in reversing atherosclerosis. |

Mercury toxicity causes a nervous system disorder resembling Parkinson's disease, and people suffering from the disorder have been shown to have high mercury levels in their tissues. Recommendation: Mercury is not something you would ever supplement intentionally; however, because it may be helpful to supplement your diet with cold-water fish or with supplemental fish oil, be aware that these food sources can sometimes contain high levels of heavy metals, including mercury. Drugs
In older patients with hyperthyroidism, a toxic reaction to prescription drugs must be considered. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the elderly is a low intake of iodine and higher use of aminodarone, an antihypertensive drug.15 In addition, symptoms of hyperthyroidism vary somewhat in older adults, with apathy, tachycardia and weight loss being more common. |
